bringing up girls the Hef way!

Ive seen it blogged about before, but following an article in the guardian a few days ago I realized that I had found my new ranting topic.

WHsmith have a wonderful deal selling playboy stationary to kids!  Little bunny logo on sparkly pink pencil cases, pens whatever.  Most of us men have spotted pretty ladies wearing the clothing – the girls feel good for the sexual confidence it promotes and projects.  But I’ve also started to notice the girls wearing it getting younger.  Its an incredibly popular brand as it relates to sex.  The stationary sits alongside Bratz, hello kitty and Winnie the Pooh for fucks sake.

Fine, yes, empowerment blah blah blah, if you are aiming to be in playboy then good for you (and your eventual need for false breasts), but this is selling to kids as something cool to aspire to - being wanked over by solitary teenagers and unsatisfied husbands.  This is systematically undermining progress for equal rights on both sides.  Its associating girls as not having a problem being objects – and in some respects is making women believe they can just use their ‘empowerment’ to get men to do what they want with the false hope of sex that drives most of us.  Is that the kind of power aimed at by the feminist movement? No.  No, I think they might want women to recieve forms of ‘respect’ beyond an erection and nearby Kleenex.

WHsmith are bastards for doing it, but clever ones at that. Its popular so they’ll bring out the ‘its just a bunny’ quotes and disassociate any relation to the pornography the image symbolises and promotes, and sell by the bucketload.

‘Playboy is probably one of the most popular ranges weve ever sold.  It outsells all other brands of stationary, like Withit by a staggering amount.  That should give you an idea of how popular the brand is.  We're not here to act as a moral censor

So says the WHSmith head of media relations. Shes right. But she is supposed to act with corporate responsibility.  But then that simply wouldn’t be retail now would it?

News coverage to the negative will only help matters: Kids don’t want to be good, they want to be bad, yer mum fuk yoo im gonna b a playboy grl an shw wot a rebl I am by getting preggerz at 15 thatll teech yoo to nick my vodka an weed!

Okay so the teen pregnancy thing bears no relation to what im talking about but I just thought id sling that in due to the ‘sex object’ factor.

    But, well, its only stationary.

Many will say that its harmless, but then let me say it again, the brand represents pornography.  It is for adults, if it really is silly to have a problem with it, then Im sure these swastika pencil cases will go down just fine. No? but it'd only be stationary.  If that’s what the kids want then who are we to get all mary whitehouse?

Im getting all mary whitehouse? Yes. Yes i am.  But im right. If it were only the far end of schoolkids with this kind of stuff, fair enough - but kids that aren’t even old enough to become a stereotypical teen mother having this stuff? That’s not very good is it now?

But then, I get pissed off at mind numbing slagmags like Zoo!

    Rant over... for now.

the prostitution of dignity for a sense of humour?

The smallest blows against ignorance seen as too much?

    Im amazed, and you’re afraid.

Right on. I teach at a school that has uniforms, which I have never liked. But I must say, at least the children are somewhat protected from becoming walking advertizements for sex publications. (Even if it does not teach them to make informed choices). --Amber

It is a strong symbol, like the nike tick, or adidas stripes and I feel this has part of the attraction for younger people. Also there is kind of a 'sheep' reaction to it now, it's the 'cool' thing to do. I used to buy handbags and accesories with the logo on but I am 23 and understand exactly where the symbol had come from. There are a lot of children out there who have a vague idea, but don't really understand yet because of sheep culture continue to wear the symbols. I don't feel they themselves are using it as empowerment but I do believe that those observing may take it as a sign to take advantage. Perhaps I am being over dramatic, perhaps not but I believe you're right they should not be selling this brand to children.

Recently, there was a poll that said that one of the most popular jobs a young girl aspires to be when they grow up is a glamour model. It really annoys me that people think it's okay to be famous for having big boobs and showing them.
When I was at Download, the cameramen were pointing their cameras at the ladies sat on people's shoulders, trying to get them to get their boobs out. When they did, the got cheered. The ONE woman who didn't, got booed (well, I cheered her.)
There is something seriously wrong with thinking you can only get self respect through something like that. These people have no dignity, and the people who stick it in young kids faces as something acceptable, should really be kicked hard in the balls.
Okay, so I've veered off the subject of Playboy pencil cases, but I hope you can see what I mean =)

Dammit, Phil, your rants always get me thinking. It hurts! And by the way you must be the only other person I've spoken to who doesn't think Little Britian is the best programme EVER. It's crap. Half the sketches aren't funny and the ones that are, are overused.

I couldn't agree more... I like to think that I'm liberal in my views and I'm usually of the opinion 'live and let live' but I was shocked when I saw this range. It's just not right for young girls to be wearing playboy clothes etc, it's just tarty and gives out the wrong messages. Especially as most of these kids aren't even old enough to legally have sex.

Woah, major rantage! It's always good to get it off your chest and inform people though!

You're very right though, those scallies would've milked it for every penny it was worth.

Visit again and view the wonder that is my newly decorated jeans! Hope that all is well with you and that you've calmed after your rant.

wow, i think i love you. lol na , kidding. But wow, cool, me, being a feminist, i like it when men have sense and understanding about this issue. I wont go too much into it, but one of the reasons i emancipated myself from society is that women are seen like sex objects, and it really got to me, as i am a woman who doesnt feel the need to show off my body etc... But, playboy being worn by young children, is sick. Like, Jordan being idolised by young girls today, is sick. And, one of my goals in life , is to write a book, so i can help the next generation of girls, to see that us woman can be more than sex symbols and house wives etc...So, once again, man, you are amazing!!!! And when i can be bothered, il blog about you!!! Take it sleazy, my fellow tauri xxx Princess Yu

I wholeheartedly agree with you sir, the depths to which society will sink in the name of making money and entertainment (a seperate rant in itself) never ceases to stagger me. Although we will most likely make no difference ranting about it in our respective spaces, it is somewhat heartening to know that there our others out there that feel the same.

To start with I just ignored seeing this around because I've seen frankly much worse. At least the rabbit on stands for something corruptible, as opposed to actually being something corruptible, if you see what I mean. But since I've actually seen all the stuff on sale I've done a swift U-turn because the amount of stuff and it's pervasiveness in the young is unbelievable!

I'll play devil's advocate for a minute though, as all us old guys and girls have observed, the young are getting old fast. At that age, for me, pornography was completely unknown and alien and although the article would have you believe that it is that way still, I don't believe it is true to the same extent that it used to be, thanks to the wonderful world of the Internet no doubt. In a way I see this as just a part of the general change in attitude and social culture of the young, rather than the cause of it. I think Playboy are leaping on the bandwagon of an increasingly aware young generation, and people's general blase (no accent, doh!) attitude to the change. After all, what's a bunny on a pencilcase when any one of them can fire up the Internet and see what's behind it any time they like?

Amy (aims1) wrote about this a while back actually, if you wanted to browse through her archives, I think I've changed my mind since I read hers though. I think my opinions generally stand shoulder to shoulder with your own anyway.

Go you. To put it simply.
I came on here to ask if you are a neighbours neighbours fan or just very clued up on soap music and here i am having just read a blummin good article.
Tis the way i would like to start most mornings : )
a cuppa would be nice too however.

I agree with you, but the case remains that fashion is fashion.
I could go on and rant about nike and the fact thats not really trainers people are wearing or a football they are playing with but it is actually financial support for a company whos interest is profit over people.
But do you see the sales falling?
Tis an odd world we live in.

Anywho, i'll stop my rambling and get changed into my non-big-logo clothes..that fact makes them feel even comfier than they already do.
